Republicans call on Obama to withdraw birth control mandate

Republicans in Congress are threatening to take action if President Obama doesn’t reverse a new policy requiring faith based institutions to provide birth control coverage in their insurance plans.

Opponents from both parties, including the Catholic Church, are calling the move an attack on religious freedom. In a rare move today, House Speaker John Boehner took to the House floor. He told members that if Obama doesn’t reverse the new policy, Congress will take matters into its own hands.

While this mandate is creating an election year firestorm, a Public Policy Polling survey commissioned by Planned Parenthood shows the mandate actually is popular with the majority of Americans, and most notably, Catholics. According to the poll, 56 percent of Americans support health care plans that "cover prescription birth control with no additional out-of-pocket fees." Of those polled, 53 percent of Catholics said they supported the benefit.
